RoHS: restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment

Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and the Council of 8 June 2011 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment

Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS II) restricts the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in certain electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and has been in force since 3 January 2013. In July 2011 this Directive came into force, replacing the old 2006/95/EC (RoHS).

No new substances have yet been added to the RoHS II list of prohibited substances. However, the prohibition of use is no longer limited to substances from the previous edition of the Directive. Instead, a procedure was developed to add new substances in the future (similar to REACH).

Regardless of the scope of the RoHS II Directive, all products in the Lapp Group main catalog comply with Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS II). These products do not contain any of the prohibited substances specified in the RoHS II Directive or do not exceed the maximum concentrations provided for therein, except for the exceptions included in Annex III of this Directive.

REACH: restriction of the use of chemical materials

Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals

With the REACH Regulation, the European Community has created a harmonized system for the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals. The purpose of the regulation is to ensure a high level of environmental, health and safety protection.

REACH came into force on June 1, 2007. It amended a number of specifications relating to the material composition of products, as previously regulated, for example, by Directive 76/769/EEC on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States concerning restrictions on the production, marketing and use of certain hazardous chemicals, both in pure form and as part of preparations and products. However, the REACH regulation does not apply to the preparations and products themselves consisting of chemical substances.

All LAPP products are products and comply with the following provisions of the REACH regulation:

  • Information requirements for products containing substances of very high concern (SVHC) at concentrations greater than 0.1%.
  • Compliance with the requirements for the use of substances requiring authorization in accordance with Annex XIV of the REACH regulation.
  • Compliance with production, marketing and use restrictions specified in Annex XVII of the REACH regulation.
